Crazy 8s
Rapid ideation — one idea per round, voted on immediately
What is it?
A time-boxed rapid ideation technique where participants generate one idea per round across up to 8 rounds, with immediate dot-voting after each round to surface the most compelling ideas.
Why use it?
Teams default to safe thinking under normal meeting conditions — people self-censor, anchor on the first idea, and filter before generating. Crazy 8s forces quantity over quality, breaks creative blocks, and ensures every voice contributes equally.
How it works
The facilitator sets a problem statement and optional per-round prompts. Each round: participants have a fixed time window to type one raw idea, then 15 seconds to cast 3 dot votes on the revealed ideas. The top 2 ideas per round are surfaced at the end.
When to use it?
During discovery workshops, innovation sessions, design sprints, or any problem-solving meeting where the team needs to break out of conventional thinking.
Who should attend?
Product Managers, Designers, Business Analysts, Scrum Masters facilitating requirement elicitation, and any cross-functional team tackling an open-ended problem.
Facilitator tips

Resist the urge to explain or defend ideas during rounds — raw, even half-baked ideas are the point. Editing happens later.

Use the round prompts deliberately: 'What if budget was unlimited?', 'What would a competitor do?', 'Most radical idea possible'. Constraints unlock creativity.

The dot vote is a signal, not a decision. The round 3 underdog that got 1 vote might be the most innovative — use the final summary as a conversation starter, not a final ranking.

For remote teams, encourage participants to turn off cameras during the idea generation phase to minimize social pressure and reduce anchoring on others' reactions.
